Oh Canada
You know, somewhere inside me I honestly believed (maybe
wanted to believe) I was being picked up at the airport in
Toronto by a sled-dog team. Come on! Where's the icy
tundra and glaciers?! No, Canada has a hot, hot Toronto in
the summer and I'm in it. Beautiful sun, though. I just wasn't
expecting any kind of sweat!
But here I am again, filming another movie in the summer.
The first since "Walk the Line"; the second ever. And what a
character to play!! Oh, Murphy Bivens.you all should get a kick
out of him. The more I read the script and the revisions and
am on set watching the film unfold, the more and more proud
I am to have my name somewhere on it. When I originally read
it before auditioning
I remember thinking how much it had
to say and how entertaining it was! But now, after seeing the
actors play it and reading where it's going...man! Gustin Nash
wrote it. He used to work in a camera shop in the valley of LA.
Someone found "Charlie Bartlett" and now he's making it a
movie. I keep looking for time to take him out to hear him
answer,"What are you thinking right now?" I hope to read
more from him. Filming offers a complete change of lifestyle
for me. Change is important to me. There is innate desire in
me (in all of us?) to get comfortable and in cruise-control mode
as soon as possible. It's in that state, though, that I zone
out, get bored, and stop thinking on my toes and writing. But
change, it distracts me and destroys my calendar and plans!
It leaves me wondering and that's what staying in one spot
for two months (both the thought of it and actually being here
for almost a month already) has done so far. It's not the road.
It's not moving daily. It's not waking up Jaco a half hour before
my Dad has us in the lobby. It's all up to me. No schedule and,
yet, something about having no schedule finds me even more
in a seat of responsibility to read and listen and watch and
write. Also, actors are different then musicians.
I've seen both, and Ill say it again, actors
are different then musicians.
I like both. So different...
Change is good!
I miss playing to you all,
all the time, though. I'm trying
to find some cafes here in Toronto to drop in
and play. I'll let you know when I do so you can
come. Sorry to be off the road for so long but I
wouldn't leave you if I didn't think it was all gonna
be worth it.
I've been listening to Gnarles Barkley, Bob Dylan,
and "The Sound of Music" Soundtrack and just
finished reading "On the Road" by Jack Karoack. I
also wrote a new song last night and have started
several others (always starting...never finishing...
come on, Tyler!).
Well, it's time for bed for all sane Canadians who are
not enjoying Jazz Fest.here tonight...and me. I've been
wanting so badly to catch you all up on what's been
going on, but things distract me and change and I try to keep up. I'll be on the message board real soon to say hello and answer any other questions I didn't answer here. Can't wait to talk to you all then and see you when I play here. I'm sure you'll get to meet most of the cast of the movie...they're the coolest. You'll not be disappointed! Take care, all, and good-night...
Tyler
